New research has uncovered a surprisingly simple remedy for constipation – and chances are, it’s already in your kitchen.

Dried fruit increases stool weight

Participants who consumed 3 ounces (about 85 grams) of dried fruit daily had an average increase in stool weight of 21 grams per day.

This contrasts sharply with the placebo group, which only saw a 1.6-gram increase, proving dried fruit’s digestive power.

More frequent, complete bowel movements

Both the dried fruit and fruit juice groups experienced 1.3 more complete, spontaneous bowel movements per week than the placebo group.

This means participants felt fully relieved – without straining or using laxatives.

Juice helps, but not as much

Juice made from the same fruits offered modest benefits, but didn’t increase stool weight significantly.

That’s likely because it lacks the fiber that’s present in whole dried fruit.

No significant side effects from dried fruit

Participants in the dried fruit group reported no significant side effects.

In contrast, those in the juice group experienced more intestinal gurgling – probably due to the juice’s higher sugar content.

Easy to add to your diet

Dried fruit is versatile and portable. You can sprinkle it on your morning cereal, mix it with nuts for a homemade trail mix, or simply snack on it straight from the bag – no meal prep needed.

Rich in fiber and sorbitol

Dried fruits are loaded with fiber and a natural sugar called sorbitol, which pulls water into the intestines. This helps soften stool and promotes regular bowel movements.

Boosts quality of life

People in the dried fruit group reported better overall well-being. When your digestion improves, your daily comfort and confidence often do, too.

A smarter snack alternative

Instead of reaching for chips or cookies, try dried fruit. It’s a healthier option packed with nutrients, especially helpful for people looking to increase fiber without sacrificing flavor.

Moderation is key

While beneficial, too much dried fruit can lead to diarrhea or blood sugar spikes, particularly in people with diabetes. Start small and monitor how your body reacts.

Don’t ignore serious symptoms

If you’re dealing with chronic or severe constipation, or symptoms like blood in the stool, unintentional weight loss, or nausea, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider.

Diet changes help, but some cases require medical attention.
