They may look like two different medications, but Wegovy and Ozempic actually contain the exact same active ingredient.

Still, they’re marketed, priced, and prescribed differently. Here are the essential facts that explain what separates these two seemingly identical drugs.

Same ingredient, different doses

Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain Semaglutide – a synthetic version of the gut hormone GLP-1.

The key difference lies in dosage: Wegovy is available in doses up to 2.4 mg, while Ozempic tops out at 1.0 mg.

Wegovy is specifically approved for weight management in people with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27+ with weight-related health issues.

It’s effective in promoting significant weight loss, especially at the higher doses.

No public reimbursement for Wegovy

Wegovy is not subsidized by public health systems. Patients prescribed Wegovy for weight loss must cover the full cost out of pocket, regardless of dosage.

Ozempic qualifies for reimbursement only if prescribed for type 2 diabetes and if cheaper alternatives have been tried first.

According to the Danish Health Authority, there is no pharmacological difference between Wegovy and Ozempic at lower doses.

The only differences are the name, packaging, and official usage.

Identical composition – even the additives

Besides Semaglutide, both drugs contain the exact same additives: phenol (preservative), disodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide, propylene glycol, hydrochloric acid, and sterile water.

Although prices vary by region and supplier, Ozempic generally costs significantly less than Wegovy, especially at lower doses.

Wegovy offers more dosing options

Wegovy provides five different dose levels: 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.7, and 2.4 mg, which allows for a more gradual titration – important in weight management.

Ozempic only offers three levels: 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mg.
