Dust mites are an invisible nuisance in many homes, especially for those with allergies.

Fortunately, there are several simple lifestyle changes you can make to significantly reduce their presence.

Air out your home every day

One of the most effective ways to reduce dust mites is regular ventilation.

Open windows on opposite sides of your home for 5–10 minutes, three times a day, to lower indoor humidity and make conditions less favorable for mites.

Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent

Dust mites thrive in humid environments. By maintaining a relative humidity of 40–45 percent, you dry out their habitat and prevent them from multiplying.

Wash your bedding frequently

Change your bed linen 2–4 times a month and wash it at 60°C (140°F). The high temperature kills dust mites and removes the allergenic particles they leave behind.

Clean duvets and pillows four times a year

Your bed is a dust mite hotspot. Washing your duvet and pillow at 60°C at least four times a year can significantly reduce the population.

Use dust mite-proof mattress covers

If you already suffer from dust mite allergy, consider using a dust mite-proof mattress cover.
