These dietary supplements have now been recalled because they contain excessively high levels of vitamins.

Dietary supplements are widely sold online today and are used by many adults to supplement their diet.

The products are regulated by fixed limits designed to protect consumers from consuming excessive amounts of certain vitamins and minerals.

According to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet), the limits are set based on what the body can tolerate over time.

For adults, an upper limit of 80 micrograms of vitamin D per day has been established. For the minerals iron and zinc, the limits are lower.

The regulations take into account that these substances are also obtained through regular food and fortified foods.

What happens if you get too much?

Mattilsynet states that a high intake of vitamin D, iron, or zinc over a long period can be harmful to health.

A single dose is not considered dangerous, but zinc in high amounts can cause discomfort such as nausea and vomiting.

Correct dosing is therefore important. For children and adolescents, the permitted amounts are even lower than for adults.

Dietary supplements must therefore be clearly labeled to indicate their intended users.

Recall

The case concerns Rawfoodshop Scandinavia AB, which has recalled three dietary supplements sold via rawfoodshop.no.

According to the company’s own statement, the products contain more vitamin D, iron, and zinc than the permitted limits for adults.

This applies to Holistic D3 Vitamin 5000 IU, Holistic Zinc 25 mg, and Holistic Iron Complex with vitamin C.
