Three beverages linked to increased dementia risk, expert says

Several popular beverages are linked in recent research to an increased risk of cognitive decline. However, the warning does not apply only to obviously unhealthy choices.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and affects millions of people worldwide.

The disease develops gradually and affects memory and brain function.

According to the Thai health website Sanook.com, the American physician Dr. Sarabh Sethi stated in a TikTok video that certain beverages may influence dementia risk, although the research does not provide definitive answers.

Sugar and metabolism

According to Sanook.com, Dr. Sarabh Sethi highlights sports drinks as an example of beverages with a high sugar content.

They often contain large amounts of sugar and almost no fiber, which can cause blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. Over time, this may lead to insulin resistance.

According to the research cited, this condition is associated in several studies with an increased risk of dementia.

However, these findings show correlations and do not prove a direct causal relationship.

Alcohol and sleep

Alcohol is mentioned for its impact on sleep. Good sleep is important for the brain, as it helps remove waste products.

According to the National Institutes of Health, a lack of sleep in midlife can increase the risk of dementia. Alcohol may therefore play an indirect role.

The surprising choice

Sugar-free soft drinks are often perceived as a healthier alternative, but according to Dr. Sarabh Sethi, artificial sweeteners may affect gut bacteria and thereby also impair brain function.

A study published by the American Academy of Neurology found that people with the highest intake of artificial sweeteners experienced a significantly faster decline in memory and thinking than those with a low intake.
