Many people take supplements in the morning out of habit, but the time of day can matter more than most realize.

Dietary supplements have become a regular part of daily life for many people. However, their effectiveness is not only about what you take, but also when you take it.

Several dietitians warn in an article from Parade against consuming certain vitamins and minerals first thing in the morning.

Morning habits and the stomach

For many, the day begins with coffee and little or no food. According to nutrition experts, this is not always an ideal combination with supplements.

Dietitian Dr. Sonya Angelone explains that some vitamins and minerals can irritate the stomach if taken on an empty stomach, causing nausea or discomfort.

Dietitian Scott Keatley also points out that coffee and tea can reduce the absorption of certain nutrients.

This means that morning routines can lessen the effectiveness of supplements, even when the intention is good.

Vitamin absorption

Fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K require fat from food to be absorbed properly.

According to dietitians Scott Keatley and Lisa Moskovitz, it is therefore better to take them with a larger meal later in the day.

Iron requires special attention. Although it is best absorbed without food, Sonya Angelone notes that many people experience stomach discomfort.

For this reason, it is often recommended to take iron with a small snack and to avoid coffee, tea, and calcium at the same time.

Magnesium

Magnesium is also mentioned by the experts. Dietitian Jessica Cording believes that many people benefit from taking magnesium in the evening, as it can have a calming effect and may be easier on the stomach.

Supplements work best when taken at the right time. Small changes in habits can therefore make a real difference.
