High blood pressure can develop without obvious symptoms. That is why experts recommend checking blood pressure regularly and ensuring that measurements are taken correctly.

Several factors can affect blood pressure during a reading. According to heart specialists, a full bladder can cause blood pressure to rise temporarily.

Crossed legs or an incorrectly positioned cuff can also produce misleading results.

The American Heart Association therefore recommends sitting still with both feet flat on the floor and the arm positioned at heart level when measuring blood pressure.

Values vary

Experts do not completely agree on what the ideal blood pressure should be. American specialists generally recommend values below 130/80 mmHg, while European guidelines are slightly less strict.

According to the European Society of Cardiology, adults under the age of 65 should ideally have a systolic reading between 120 and 129 and a diastolic reading between 70 and 79. Slightly higher values are often accepted for older adults.

However, cardiologist Peter Radke from Schön Klinik Neustadt told the media outlet Focus that small fluctuations are usually not dangerous.

Risk without symptoms

Many people do not notice high blood pressure until the condition has already caused damage to blood vessels or organs. Symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or ringing in the ears often appear late.

According to Focus, lifestyle changes such as exercise, a healthy diet, weight loss, and reduced smoking can help lower blood pressure. If readings remain consistently high, people should contact a doctor to find the right treatment.
