A neurologist is warning against a type of canned food that, in rare cases, can be dangerous to eat.

A healthy and balanced diet is important for both the body and the brain.

However, even everyday foods can pose a risk if they are not stored or packaged properly.

According to American neurologist Dr. Baibing Chen, there are certain foods he chooses to avoid, Express reports.

Authorities agree

According to Express, the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) states that botulism can occur if food is contaminated with toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

This typically happens when food has not been preserved or packaged correctly.

The FSA emphasizes that the risk is low in countries such as the UK because food safety standards are generally high.

Nevertheless, the agency recommends that people do not eat food from certain cans.

Avoid these cans

Dr. Baibing Chen advises against eating food from dented, cracked, or bulging cans, as they may be contaminated with botulinum toxin. The same advice is included in the FSA's guidance.

The toxin can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to paralysis, vision problems, breathing difficulties, and, in the worst cases, death.

Because the toxin cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, the FSA recommends discarding any cans if there is any doubt about their condition or how they have been stored.
