Waking up couple times a night could be early warning signs of Alzheimer

A specific kind of brief wake-up at night may quietly flag something years before any memory trouble begins.

You probably know those tiny moments at night when you shift, half-wake, and drift straight back to sleep. Most people never give them a second thought in the morning. Scientists have begun asking what these flickers might reveal about the aging brain.

Researchers at the University of Liège in Belgium have found that a particular kind of brief nighttime arousal is tied to a higher genetic risk of Alzheimer's disease.

The study, published in the journal Sleep in May 2026, suggests the pattern could serve as an early biomarker, years before any cognitive decline begins.

The team monitored sleep in a lab using brain recordings. They tracked 453 younger adults and 87 adults in late middle age, with an average age of 59. Only the older group showed the link between these micro-awakenings and genetic Alzheimer's risk.

What the researchers actually measured

Not every brief awakening meant the same thing. The researchers sorted the arousals by whether muscle tone also rose during the moment of waking.

Those without a rise in muscle tone were tied to a higher combined genetic risk for Alzheimer's and more memory decline over follow-up.

Arousals that came with a rise in muscle tone showed the opposite pattern. Those adults had lower genetic risk and better cognitive scores over time. The findings held across years of in-lab monitoring.

A brain region the size of a rice grain

The team suspects a small brainstem region called the locus coeruleus plays a role. It is about the size of a grain of rice and helps regulate wakefulness and sleep.

It is one of the first places where the abnormal protein deposits linked to Alzheimer's can appear, sometimes as early as the teenage years.

"Sleep could become an accessible marker for the early identification of vulnerable individuals," senior author Gilles Vandewalle said, according to Medical Xpress.

What this means and what it does not

The findings do not mean waking briefly at night is a diagnosis. The study shows an association in late middle age, not a cause, and younger adults in the same study showed no such pattern.

Anyone with ongoing sleep problems or memory concerns should talk to a doctor rather than read a diagnosis into a restless night.
