Vaseline is often mentioned as a possible solution for dry and tight skin, but it is not suitable for everyone.

Winter is harsh on the skin. Many people experience that their skin feels tight, dry, or irritated, especially on the face.

This is partly due to cold outdoor air and dry, heated indoor air, which together increase moisture loss from the skin.

The skin’s natural protection

The outermost layer of the skin functions as a protective barrier that retains moisture. When this barrier is weakened, moisture evaporates more quickly.

According to CNET, products with an occlusive effect can form a layer on top of the skin and reduce this moisture loss.

Vaseline is one of the most well-known occlusive products. It does not add moisture but helps retain the moisture that is already present in the skin.

However, dermatologist Hadley King explains to CNET that the skin must first be supplied with moisture through a serum or cream. Otherwise, the occlusive layer has a limited effect.

In addition, dermatologist Debra Jaliman says to CNET people with acne that pores may become clogged.

Helpful during winter

The method is neither new nor a miracle solution. For people with very dry skin, it can be helpful during the winter period if used correctly.

For others, a regular rich cream may be sufficient. According to CNET, the method also requires regular use over several weeks before any potential effect can be noticed.
