Here's how to keep your strawberries fresh – without storing them in the fridge or on the kitchen counter.

Avoid the fridge – it ruins the flavor

Strawberries lose both flavor and firmness in the fridge. The cold quickly makes them soft and bland – even after just a few hours.

The countertop encourages mold

Leaving strawberries out in a fruit bowl speeds up over-ripening and mold. Warmth and humidity are the enemy of these delicate berries.

Place the berries in a sealed plastic container – ideally in a single layer – to protect them from moisture and bacteria. This dramatically extends their shelf life.

Use a paper towel in the bottom

Line the container with a dry paper towel. It absorbs excess moisture and helps keep the berries dry and fresh.

Don’t seal the lid completely. A tiny gap allows for minimal airflow, preventing too much humidity while avoiding drying them out.

Store them in a cupboard

A cool, dark cupboard with a temperature between 12 and 15°C (54–59°F) is ideal. Here, strawberries stay flavorful and firm for several days.

Never wash them before storing

Washing accelerates spoilage. Strawberries must be completely dry and unwashed before storage – rinse only just before eating.

Give them a quick vinegar bath

Want to go all in? Soak the berries in a mix of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water for 1–2 minutes. This kills bacteria and extends freshness.

Moisture is the enemy. After soaking, make sure the berries are dried completely – or you risk mold despite the vinegar.

Enjoy the taste of summer all week

Using this method, your strawberries can stay fresh for up to a week. That means more enjoyment – and less money thrown in the bin.
