New research hints that doxycycline may help reduce the risk of developing schizophrenia.

A new study suggests that doxycycline, a widely used antibiotic, could play a surprising role in preventing schizophrenia.

The research, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry and reported by El Confidencial, examined health data from more than 56,000 adolescents who had received psychiatric care.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh, the University of Oulu, and University College Dublin discovered that those treated with doxycycline were about one-third less likely to later develop schizophrenia compared with peers who took other antibiotics.

A new clue in mental health prevention

Schizophrenia usually appears in early adulthood and can cause profound changes in thinking, emotion, and behavior.

Many affected patients had already experienced mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD during adolescence.

Despite decades of research, there are no known treatments that reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.

Lead researcher Ian Kelleher, professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh, noted that the findings point to new potential ways to prevent severe mental illnesses, though he cautioned that the study was not a randomized clinical trial.

How doxycycline might protect the brain

Doxycycline, typically prescribed for acne or respiratory infections, is unusual among antibiotics because it can cross the blood-brain barrier.

Once inside the brain, it appears to have anti-inflammatory effects.

Scientists believe that inflammation during brain development may disrupt neural connections, increasing vulnerability to mental disorders.

By reducing this inflammation, doxycycline might help protect the developing brain.

However, researchers emphasize that more clinical studies are needed before drawing firm conclusions.
