Studies have questioned whether specific fruits can genuinely contribute to liver resilience.

According to Kiskegyed.hu, renewed scientific interest in antioxidant rich foods stems from rising liver disease rates and the difficulty of detecting early damage.

Because oxidative stress contributes to cell injury, studies frequently explore how dietary patterns interact with metabolic risk factors.

These trials often involve small cohorts, which limits generalisability but still shapes ongoing inquiry.

The outlet noted that blueberries are repeatedly included in this research because they contain polyphenols and anthocyanins.

These compounds are examined for possible anti inflammatory effects, though experts emphasise that most evidence remains observational.

Expert analysis

Dr. Zhaoping Li of UCLA highlighted that nutritional quality has been central to liver health long before modern pharmacological approaches.

Her comments point to a long standing reliance on food based strategies in preventive care.

Kiskegyed.hu also referenced hepatologist Dr. Entoni Martinez from the University at Buffalo, who described blueberries as among the most studied fruits in this context.

He stated that existing literature links them with reduced oxidative stress and improved lipid metabolism, while noting that methodologies vary across studies.

A 2023 study published in Heliyon associating blueberry supplements with lower markers of liver injury, and a separate trial in which participants receiving black blueberry extract showed comparatively better liver function.

Researchers typically caution that these findings are preliminary.

Dietary guidance

Dr. Entoni Martinez recommended consuming roughly one cup of fresh or frozen blueberries daily, consistent with US fruit intake guidelines.

Still, specialists interviewed stressed that no single food can ensure liver protection.

In general, supporting liver health involves following a Mediterranean style diet, keeping alcohol intake low, minimising ultraprocessed foods and considering the documented benefits associated with coffee consumption.

Other antioxidant rich fruits such as citrus, papaya and prickly pear were also mentioned.
