A planned holiday at sea took an unexpected turn, as several passengers experienced stomach problems.

During a week-long cruise in the Caribbean, nearly 200 people fell ill. According to U.S. health authorities, a total of 193 cases were reported.

Those affected included both passengers and crew members. In total, 141 passengers and 52 crew members were impacted.

Most experienced vomiting and diarrhea, which are typical symptoms of gastrointestinal infections.

Measures and control

The cruise operator responded by increasing cleaning efforts and thoroughly disinfecting the ship. At the same time, sick individuals were isolated from others until they were able to leave the vessel.

Health authorities were involved in efforts to contain the outbreak.

The incident was also reported to a U.S. program that monitors illness on cruise ships, and inspectors were sent on board.

Nature of the infection

The illness can spread rapidly, especially in environments where many people are in close proximity. Transmission can occur through contact, contaminated surfaces, or food and drink.

The ship completed its journey in Florida and shortly afterward departed on a new voyage after precautions had been taken, according to HealthDay.

It was only later confirmed that the outbreak was caused by norovirus, which, according to the CDC, is one of the most common causes of gastrointestinal infections in closed environments.
