Scientists may have found a way to turn down anxiety

Researchers say a newly identified brain circuit could one day help pave the way for more targeted treatments for anxiety.

Almost everyone knows what anxiety feels like. It can appear before an important meeting, during a stressful period, or when facing an uncertain situation. For some people, however, those feelings become persistent and begin to affect daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.

As anxiety disorders continue to affect millions worldwide, researchers are searching for better ways to understand what happens inside the brain when these conditions develop. A new study from Spain may have brought scientists one step closer to an answer, reports Science Daily.

A closer look at the brain

The research, led by neuroscientist Juan Lerma and colleagues at the Institute for Neurosciences in Spain, focused on the amygdala, a region known for its role in processing emotions such as fear, stress, and anxiety.

Rather than examining the brain as a whole, the team investigated a specific group of neurons that appeared to be behaving differently in mice displaying anxiety-like behaviors. The researchers found that an imbalance in this tiny neural circuit was linked to increased anxiety and reduced social interaction.

Promising results

After identifying the problem, the scientists attempted to restore normal activity within the circuit.

The outcome surprised even the researchers:

  • Anxiety-related behaviors decreased
  • Social interaction improved
  • Brain activity became more balanced

The same approach also reduced anxiety-like behavior in other mice that naturally displayed elevated levels of anxiety, suggesting the discovery may extend beyond a single experimental model.

What happens next?

The findings, published in the journal iScience, do not mean that a cure for anxiety has been found. The research was conducted in mice, and much more work is needed before any potential treatment could be tested in humans.

Even so, experts believe the study provides valuable insight into how anxiety may be regulated in the brain. By targeting specific neural circuits rather than broader brain systems, future therapies could potentially become more precise and effective.

For now, the research offers something scientists have been seeking for years: a clearer understanding of the biological mechanisms that may drive anxiety.
