Today, around one in five patients is under the age of 54, compared with only about one in ten 30 years ago.
As a result, the American College of Surgeons Congress 2025 has developed new educational materials to help patients recognize the symptoms and discuss them with their doctor.

According to research presented at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2025, rectal bleeding was the strongest indicator of cancer among patients under the age of 50 who were evaluated because of symptoms.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that people at average risk begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45.
People at increased risk may need to begin screening at an earlier age.
