An increasing number of younger people are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, prompting doctors to urge people to take symptoms that are often overlooked seriously.

Many people experience stomach or bowel problems from time to time. These may include constipation, diarrhea, or changes in bowel habits.

However, if these symptoms persist or feel different from normal, they should be evaluated by a doctor, according to SciTechDaily.

Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, nausea, or a reduced appetite may also be signs of bowel disease.

More young people are being affected

Nevertheless, figures from the American Cancer Society show that the disease is becoming more common among younger people.

Today, around one in five patients is under the age of 54, compared with only about one in ten 30 years ago.

As a result, the American College of Surgeons Congress 2025 has developed new educational materials to help patients recognize the symptoms and discuss them with their doctor.

The most important warning sign

Blood in the stool is one of the most serious warning signs and should always be investigated if it occurs repeatedly.

According to research presented at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2025, rectal bleeding was the strongest indicator of cancer among patients under the age of 50 who were evaluated because of symptoms.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that people at average risk begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45.

People at increased risk may need to begin screening at an earlier age.
