Part of the banana almost always ends up in the trash, but it may have value that very few people know about.

For most people, the peel goes straight into the organic waste bin after eating a banana. However, that is not necessarily the only option.

According to Healthline, as reported by Herkkusuut, the peel contains several nutrients that can be put to good use.

Among other things, it contains dietary fiber, potassium, amino acids, healthy fats, and antioxidants.

The peels of less ripe bananas are particularly high in antioxidants.

What does it contain?

According to Healthline, dietary fiber may help support digestion and keep blood sugar levels more stable.

Potassium also plays an important role in maintaining healthy blood pressure and strong bones.

Healthline also states that antioxidants may help reduce inflammation in the body and are associated with a lower risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Can it be used?

Before using a banana peel, it should be washed thoroughly.

Healthline also recommends choosing organic bananas, as conventionally grown bananas may have pesticide residues on their peels.

The peel can be tough and slightly bitter, but it becomes softer when cooked.

It can be used in stir-fries, blended into a smoothie, or finely chopped and mixed into banana bread.

Banana peels are actually edible. According to Healthline, they can therefore be used in cooking instead of being thrown away.
