Vitamin C does not prevent colds for most people, but daily use shortens them

The idea that a high dose of vitamin C will fend off a coming cold does not hold up in the clinical trial data. A pooled analysis of nearly 11,000 people found that daily supplements produced no meaningful drop in how often adults in the general population caught colds.

The most cited evidence comes from a Cochrane review by Harri Hemila and Elizabeth Chalker, which pooled 29 trial comparisons involving 11,306 participants. In the general community trials, the relative risk of catching a cold with daily vitamin C was 0.97, statistically indistinguishable from placebo.

Supplement marketing has leaned on vitamin C for decades, but the evidence for cold prevention in ordinary adults is thin.

What vitamin C actually does in the body

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and a cofactor for enzymes involved in collagen synthesis and gene regulation. It also plays a documented role in immune defense. In a 2017 review in the journal Nutrients, Anitra Carr and Silvia Maggini describe how vitamin C accumulates in white blood cells, particularly neutrophils, where it supports chemotaxis, phagocytosis and microbial killing.

The vitamin also supports the epithelial barrier, the layer of cells lining the skin and airways that keeps pathogens out. Deficiency impairs immunity and raises susceptibility to infections, especially of the respiratory tract.

That biological role is real. It does not translate, however, into a shield against colds when adults already meet basic dietary needs.

Where supplementation does help

The Cochrane pooled data show that daily vitamin C shortens colds once they arrive, by about 8 percent in adults and 14 percent in children. In practical terms, that is roughly a day off a longer cold, and only for people already taking the supplement before symptoms start.

Taking a large dose only at the first sneeze does not do the same job. The review found no consistent effect on cold duration or severity from vitamin C started at symptom onset, drawn from seven therapeutic trials covering more than 3,000 cold episodes.

One group stands out. In five trials of marathon runners, skiers and soldiers on subarctic exercises, daily vitamin C nearly halved the risk of catching a cold, with a pooled relative risk of 0.48. The pattern points to intense physical stress and low intake, not everyday life, as the setting where supplements make a measurable difference.

A plain-language summary from Germany's Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care reaches the same conclusion. Regular vitamin C does not protect most people from colds, and taking it only after becoming ill does not shorten them or ease symptoms.

How much you actually need

The recommended dietary allowance is 90 milligrams a day for adult men and 75 milligrams for adult women, according to US federal guidance. Smokers need an extra 35 milligrams a day, because tobacco use depletes vitamin C.

Those levels are easily reached from food. A medium orange delivers roughly 70 milligrams, one red bell pepper more than 150, and a cup of strawberries about 85. People with reliably low intakes, and smokers, are the ones for whom daily supplementation stands the best chance of doing anything at all for cold risk.

For anyone weighing high-dose vitamin C during cold season, the honest read of the trial evidence is that the effect on prevention is close to nothing, and the effect on duration is modest at best. Anyone with a persistent cold or worsening symptoms should speak with a physician rather than reach for a bigger dose.
