What your resting heart rate reveals about your risk of dying early

The number of times your heart beats each minute while you are still is more than a fitness metric. A large body of research links a lower resting heart rate to a longer life, and genetic analyses now suggest the connection is causal, not coincidence.

Mayo Clinic describes a normal adult resting heart rate as 60 to 100 beats per minute, with very fit people sitting closer to 40 bpm. Within that range, lower generally tracks with better cardiovascular health.

The genetic evidence for causality

Most longevity data comes from observational studies that show links but not cause. That changed with Mendelian randomization, a genetic method that uses inherited gene variants to test whether one trait actually drives another.

A 2019 review in the Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation concluded that genome-wide analyses have demonstrated a causal link between resting heart rate and longevity, reinforcing decades of observational findings that low resting rates travel with better health.

Rising heart rate, shrinking lifespan

A study published in September 2024 in Scientific Reports analyzed adults from three long-running cohorts: the Paris Prospective Study I in France, Whitehall I in the UK and the Framingham Heart Study in the US. Together, the pooled data covered more than 16,000 participants tracked for decades.

The researchers found that a 10 bpm rise in resting heart rate over five years in the Paris cohort was tied to a 20% higher mortality risk.

In the Framingham arm, a similar 10 bpm increase over eight years corresponded to 13% higher mortality in men and 9% higher in women, even after adjusting for other risk factors.

A separate 48-year follow-up of 852 Swedish men, all born in 1913, found that a baseline resting heart rate of 90 bpm or higher was associated with roughly 60% higher all-cause mortality compared with rates of 60 to 70 bpm.

The lowest cardiovascular mortality in that cohort was seen in men whose heart rate settled between 60 and 70 bpm over time.

What can actually move the needle

Because resting heart rate reflects how efficiently the heart pumps, the same habits that build cardiovascular fitness also bring it down. Aerobic exercise is the most established lever.

Reviews of exercise interventions find that regular aerobic activity such as walking, running and swimming consistently reduces resting heart rate. Meaningful reductions often appear within weeks of steady training.

Other evidence-based steps include maintaining a healthy weight, moderating alcohol, protecting sleep and managing chronic stress. All influence the autonomic nervous system, which sets how hard the heart works at rest.

Read the number, not the verdict

Resting heart rate is a signal, not a diagnosis. A single high reading can reflect coffee, poor sleep, dehydration or a passing infection.

A persistently elevated resting heart rate, or a rate that keeps climbing year over year, is worth raising with a physician, particularly if it comes with symptoms such as chest discomfort, dizziness or shortness of breath.
