She never imagined a stroke at 26 – until a restless night turned into a life-changing medical emergency.

Most people assume a stroke is something that only happens later in life. That belief can make it easy to dismiss unusual symptoms, especially when you're young.

According to the American Heart Association and the UK's Stroke Association, recognising the warning signs quickly can make a significant difference to recovery, regardless of age, reports Unilad.

That message has become even more relevant following the story of British woman Niamh Foster, who spoke about her experience on ITV's This Morning. Her case highlights why younger adults should also be aware of the symptoms.

A shocking diagnosis

Foster was just 26 when she suffered a stroke while asleep. During the night, she woke up feeling restless and noticed cramping on the right side of her body, but she did not believe anything serious was happening.

It was only later that morning, as her partner was getting ready for work, that they realised one side of her face had begun to droop. She was taken to hospital, where an MRI scan confirmed she had suffered a stroke.

Doctors found the cause

Further examinations revealed that the stroke was linked to a patent foramen ovale, a small opening in the heart that remains from birth. According to the American Heart Association, around one in four people has this condition, although most never experience symptoms or know they have it.

While the stroke itself was treated quickly, Foster says the recovery has been far more challenging. Nearly two years later, she is still attending occupational therapy as part of her rehabilitation.

Know the warning signs
