Researchers who scanned the brains of adults in the Basque region of Spain report that people who speak several languages tend to have brains that look younger than their chronological age. The findings were presented at the FENS Forum 2026 in Barcelona in July by Dr. Lucia Amoruso of the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, working with collaborators at Trinity College Dublin and universities in Argentina and Chile.
The gradient the team observed was steep. Bilingual speakers had brains that looked about 6 years younger than monolingual peers. Trilinguals came in around 7 years younger. People who spoke four languages had brains that looked roughly 13 years younger.
How the brain-age clock works
To measure brain age, the researchers used magnetoencephalography, a technique that picks up the faint magnetic fields brain cells generate when they fire. They fed data from 728 people into an artificial intelligence model to build what they call a brain aging clock, a map of typical brain connectivity at different ages. They then applied the clock to a second group of 144 adults who spoke between one and four languages, drawn from Spanish, Basque, French, and English.
The team controlled for age, sex, and education. Even after those adjustments, the multilingual brains kept looking younger than their birth certificates suggested.

Fluency and early learning mattered
The benefit was not just about how many languages a person could name on a form. Higher proficiency and earlier acquisition of a second language were both linked to more delayed brain aging, according to a ScienceDaily summary of the presentation. In other words, depth and duration of language use appear to matter more than a passing familiarity picked up as an adult.
Dr. Amoruso told reporters that, in simple terms, people who spoke more languages tended to have brains that looked younger than expected for their age.
What this study can and cannot show
This is an observational finding, not a controlled trial, and the numbers are modest. The results come from a conference presentation and have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal. The team also acknowledged, in their own release through FENS, that they cannot rule out the influence of other factors on the brain, such as lifestyle and social engagement, that may travel with multilingualism.
The direction of the finding does line up with earlier work on a much bigger scale. A previous multi-country European analysis found that the more languages people spoke, the less likely they were to show accelerated cognitive aging, based on a health and lifestyle model rather than brain imaging.
