Researchers at the University of Liège in Belgium analyzed the sleep of more than 500 healthy adults and found that middle-aged participants who experienced more frequent nocturnal micro-awakenings also carried a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease. The same pattern did not appear in younger adults.
The findings, published in the journal Sleep, suggest that ordinary sleep quality may one day help flag people who are more vulnerable to the disease, long before any memory problems begin.
Micro-awakenings are brief bursts of brain activity that fragment the normal sleep cycle without fully rousing the sleeper. Most people never notice them, but they show up clearly on brain recordings.
The Liège team compared these recordings with each participant's polygenic risk score, a single measure that combines many small genetic variants tied to Alzheimer's disease. The association surfaced in the older group of adults, aged 50 to 69, but not in the younger group aged 18 to 31.

What the study actually shows
The work was carried out by the GIGA Neurosciences laboratory with backing from the Stop Alzheimer's Foundation.

All participants were healthy and had no clinical symptoms. The results describe a pattern across a group, not a diagnosis for a single sleeper.
That caution matters. A restless night after a stressful week, jet lag, a snoring partner, alcohol before bed or an untreated sleep disorder can all fragment sleep without carrying any Alzheimer's meaning at all.
