A reading of 92 percent or lower at home is the point where Cleveland Clinic tells patients to call a doctor.
At 88 percent or lower, Cleveland Clinic advises going to the nearest emergency room.
Anything under 90 percent is considered hypoxemia, a low level of oxygen in the blood that reflects a problem with breathing or circulation.

Below-normal readings do not automatically mean a crisis, but they are the reason your watch or fingertip oximeter is flagging the number in the first place.
Why the reading on your wrist may look better than it is
The FDA issued a safety communication on February 19, 2021 warning that pulse oximeters have real limits.
The agency lists factors that can affect accuracy: skin thickness, poor circulation, skin pigmentation, current tobacco use, skin temperature, and use of fingernail polish.
Devices can measure oxygen levels as higher than they actually are in people with darker skin.

Cleveland Clinic estimates the reading on a consumer oximeter can be off by 2 to 4 percentage points in either direction.
That range matters when your true saturation is already borderline.
A watch showing 94 percent may reflect a genuine SpO2 several points lower.
Smartwatch SpO2 features from Apple, Garmin, and Samsung are cleared by the FDA only as general wellness tools, not medical devices.

The number changes with age and condition
Older adults often sit slightly lower than younger ones as lung elasticity and gas exchange gradually decline.
People with chronic conditions such as COPD or pneumonia may have a normal baseline that runs lower still, which is why any comparison to the 95 to 100 percent healthy range should factor in a person's own history.
Recent research has also pushed clinicians to look more carefully at the low end of "normal."

A study of 973 healthy children published in the Saudi Medical Journal in April 2025 found a median SpO2 of 99 percent, with roughly 76 percent of participants between 99 and 100 percent and the remainder between 97 and 98 percent.
No child in the study registered below 97 percent.
The authors argued that a pediatric SpO2 consistently below 97 percent warrants clinical attention.
The findings do not translate directly to adults, but they underline how much a small drop can matter.
