A sweeping nationwide recall covers store-brand bottles sold at nearly every major US pharmacy and grocery chain.

You probably have a bottle of eye drops within arm's reach.

Most of us grab them for tired screens or itchy eyes without a second thought. That everyday habit is now worth a quick trip to the bathroom cabinet.

The US Food and Drug Administration has classified a Class II recall that covers more than 4.8 million cartons of over-the-counter eye drops sold under 27 store brands. According to Newsweek, the recalling company is K.C. Pharmaceuticals of Pomona, California.

The reason is a "lack of assurance of sterility."

The company began the expanded recall on September 11, 2026. The FDA assigned the Class II label on October 5, 2026.

A Class II designation means use of the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, and that the chance of serious harm is remote.

Sterility problem matters for your eyes

Eye drops go straight onto a surface the body cannot easily defend. The immune system has a hard time fighting bacteria or fungi once they reach the eyeball, so a contaminated bottle can turn a quick squirt into a serious infection.

This is not the plant's first sterility problem in 2026. K.C. Pharmaceuticals ran an earlier recall from the same Pomona site in March, pulling about 3.1 million bottles for the same sterility concern.

C. Michael White, a professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Connecticut, addressed the pattern in The Conversation.

He wrote that the latest action points to "lingering quality control issues in the manufacturer's Pomona, California, plant that need to be urgently addressed."

A separate 2023 outbreak tied to a different maker's artificial tears is a sharp reminder of the stakes. White has cited 81 infections across 18 states, 14 cases of vision loss, four eye removals and four deaths linked to that earlier contamination.

Which brands and sizes are affected?

The affected brands include major pharmacy and grocery chains such as Walgreens, Equate (Walmart), up&up (Target), Kroger, Publix, H-E-B, Harris Teeter and Clear Eyes.

Also on the list are Good Sense, Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Leader, Best Choice, Quality Choice, TopCare Health, Equaline, Foster & Thrive, Exchange Select and Discount Drug Mart.

The recall further covers Gericare, Circle K, Lil' DrugStore, Medic's Choice, Crocodile Tears, Colirio Manzanilla A+, Colirio Ojo de Aguila, Tyson Mike Red Eye Drops and Xpect Industrial.

All of the recalled bottles hold 0.5 fluid ounces, about 15 milliliters. The lots carry expiration dates between November 30, 2026 and November 30, 2027.

The affected formulations include artificial tears, sterile eye drops AC, advanced relief, maximum redness relief, dry eye relief, ultra lubricating eye drops, an original formula and soothing tears.

What to do if you have a bottle at home?

Check the brand, lot number and expiration date on your bottle against the FDA recall notice. If it is on the list, stop using it. Keep the packaging for a refund and throw the bottle out.

If you have already used a recalled bottle, watch for warning signs. Call your doctor or an eye care professional if your eye feels painful, red, swollen or sensitive to light, if your vision is blurry or if you notice discharge.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists eye pain, eye redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing and eye discharge among the warning signs of an eye infection.
