Dermatologist Christina Haak explains how simplifying your skincare routine can be a crucial step in the fight against acne.

Why Does Acne Hit So Hard?

Acne is more than just a cosmetic concern—it’s a complex skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

This creates the perfect environment for bacterial growth, inflammation, and the familiar red spots many struggle with.

According to Christina Haak, dermatologist and owner of HAAK Dermatology Clinic, acne is a condition that is often underestimated.

“It can be a destructive disease which, if left untreated for a long time and with a certain severity, can cause permanent skin damage and scarring that lasts a lifetime,” she explains.

Although acne is most commonly associated with teenagers, it can affect people at any age—from infants with infantile acne to adults experiencing hormonal changes.

Simplify Your Skincare Routine

A well-structured skincare routine should work with your skin rather than against it. Christina Haak recommends following these key steps:

  1. Cleansing
    Use a mild, non-drying cleanser in the morning and evening to remove excess oil and dirt without damaging the skin’s natural barrier.
  2. Treatment
    If you struggle with acne, products containing active ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or retinoids can help reduce inflammation and exfoliate the skin.
    However, some of these ingredients can be irritating if overused.
  3. Moisturizing
    Even oily skin needs hydration. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that nourishes the skin without clogging pores.
  4. Sun Protection
    Many forget that sun exposure can worsen acne and lead to pigmentation, especially when using active ingredients like retinoids.
    Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

By adopting a simple but effective routine, it’s possible to support the skin’s natural healing process and prevent future breakouts.
