An American heart surgeon experienced firsthand how easily symptoms of heart disease can be overlooked.

According to Business Insider, heart surgeon Jeremy London emphasizes that many people underestimate the risk of heart disease.

High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, unstable blood sugar, and excess weight significantly increase the risk of atherosclerosis.

High blood pressure is often called a silent threat because symptoms are not always noticeable. The same applies to prediabetes. Therefore, it is important to know your numbers and take action in time.

In the interview, Jeremy London points out that even people with extensive knowledge can struggle to change their habits.

Symptoms in the woods

In 2022, he experienced chest pain during a hunting trip in Georgia. Earlier that day, he had episodes of sweating and discomfort, which he believed to be heartburn.

The pain occurred when he moved and disappeared when he sat down. This is a classic sign of problems with blood flow to the heart. Nevertheless, he initially dismissed it.

At the hospital, it turned out that he had a 99 percent blockage in a coronary artery, Business Insider reports. He had suffered a heart attack.

Small changes with a big impact

Outwardly, he lived a healthy life with regular exercise and a balanced diet. However, long working days and lack of sleep had put strain on his body.

After the heart attack, he began prioritizing sleep and reducing stress. He also discovered that he was prediabetic after continuously monitoring his blood sugar.

This led to simple changes such as short walks after meals, more breaks during the day, and a focus on fiber and protein in his diet.

According to Business Insider, the experience taught him that anyone can overlook the body’s warning signs, even people who appear to live healthily.
