According to reporting by LADbible, both hospital departments and general practitioners say that more patients than expected are seeking treatment for influenza.
Many are experiencing a longer and more severe course of illness, which has put the healthcare system under pressure earlier than usual.
Doctors describe how hospital beds are quickly being filled and waiting times are increasing.
Compared with last winter, the strain is more pronounced, which has drawn the attention of health authorities.

An unusual influenza type
According to experts, the explanation lies in a new influenza variant in the United Kingdom.
Influenza viruses change continuously, but this variant is considered to behave differently from previously known types.
This applies both to how severely patients are affected and how long the symptoms last.
Director Nicola Lewis from the World Influenza Centre at the Francis Crick Institute tells LADbible that this type of virus has not been seen for a long time.

She stresses, however, that there is no cause for panic, but rather professional concern based on current developments.
The role of the vaccine
Experience from this season also shows that this year’s influenza vaccine does not entirely match the dominant virus variant.
Doctors emphasize, however, that the vaccine is still effective.
It can reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization, which is important in a strained situation.

One symptom stands out
In addition to fever, body aches, and breathing difficulties, doctors have observed a particular symptom.
Many patients experience severe vomiting with yellow bile.
According to LADbible, infection specialist Simon Clarke explains that a lack of appetite during illness is often the cause.
Other experts point to irritation of the stomach lining.
