Sunshine can feel like the perfect antidote to a hectic routine. But for some people, combining sunlight with a commonly prescribed medication may carry unexpected consequences.
Lansoprazole is widely used to treat heartburn, acid reflux and stomach ulcers. It is also frequently prescribed to protect the stomach when patients are taking other medicines.
The drug belongs to a class known as proton pump inhibitors, which reduce stomach acid production and are generally considered safe.
Rare skin reaction
According to the NHS, prolonged use of lansoprazole can, in rare cases, trigger subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE). This is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the skin.

The condition typically presents with joint pain and a red rash on areas exposed to sunlight, such as the face, arms and nose. Sun exposure can worsen symptoms and lead to painful flare-ups.
There is no cure for SCLE, but treatments are available to manage symptoms. Doctors often prescribe strong corticosteroid creams, and in more severe cases oral medication may be required.
If the drug is the underlying cause, symptoms may gradually improve after stopping treatment, although this can take several months.
Other medicines noted
Lansoprazole is not the only proton pump inhibitor to attract attention. Previous research has suggested that omeprazole, a similar medication, may be linked to a higher incidence of severe headaches in some patients.

Health authorities stress that serious side effects remain uncommon and that the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks for most people.
Patients are advised to consult their doctor if they suspect side effects and not to discontinue prescribed medication without medical guidance.
