Many people using GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic report an unexpected side effect: hair loss.

While it’s usually temporary, it can feel alarming and frustrating. Here’s a guide that explains why it happens and what you can do.

Hair loss is not an official side effect

Although not listed as a known side effect, both patients and dermatologists have observed a link between GLP-1 medications and hair loss.

Experts believe the real trigger is rapid weight loss rather than the drugs themselves.

Weight loss as a stressor

Dramatic weight loss can act as a form of stress on the body, leading to a condition called telogen effluvium.

This type of hair shedding can also occur after illness, surgery, or major life stress.

A temporary setback

The good news: GLP-1-related hair loss is usually temporary. Once the body adapts to the weight loss, hair growth tends to recover, but the process may take months.

Different from genetic hair loss

Unlike androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness) or autoimmune-related hair loss, telogen effluvium is usually diffuse, with shedding spread across the scalp rather than concentrated in patches.

The role of nutrition

GLP-1 medications often reduce appetite, which can lead to deficiencies in protein, iron, zinc, or vitamin D.

Such deficiencies can worsen hair shedding and should be checked by a healthcare professional.

Supplements may help

Some people benefit from supplements such as Nutrafol, Viviscal, or iron and vitamin C.

However, these are most effective when hair loss is linked to actual nutritional deficiencies.

Shampoos and serums

Topical solutions can support scalp and hair health while waiting for regrowth.

Ketoconazole shampoos and serums with peptides or biotin may help strengthen and volumize hair.

Minoxidil treatment

Minoxidil, available both orally and topically, has long been approved for hair regrowth.

It won’t reset the shedding cycle caused by weight loss but can stimulate overall growth.

New therapies on the rise

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and red-light treatments are newer options that may speed up regrowth by stimulating hair follicles.

Evidence is still limited, but some patients report success.

Patience is essential

Hair regrowth takes time. For many, visible improvement doesn’t appear until 6–12 months after weight stabilizes, while for others it may take up to 18 months.

When to see a doctor

If the hair loss feels overwhelming, a dermatologist can rule out other causes and recommend treatment.
