The two diets that changed everything
The study identified two clear eating patterns: one based on processed foods high in fat and sugar, and another built on varied, nutritious meals.
These weren’t just preferences — they had measurable effects on the children.
Mothers who leaned toward a Western-style diet gave birth to children with smaller head sizes and lower scores on cognitive tests later in childhood.
In contrast, mothers who followed more balanced eating habits had children with larger head circumferences and stronger cognitive performance.

But this wasn’t based on assumptions or self-reported data alone.
The researchers used blood samples from the mothers to validate the dietary information, offering an unusually high level of accuracy.

It’s not just about food
Head growth doesn’t stop mattering after birth. In fact, continued rapid head growth into later childhood was linked to higher intelligence at around age 10 — but only in children with certain genetic predispositions.
