Tick season is in full swing, and that’s why it’s crucial to know exactly where ticks tend to hide on your body so you can remove them quickly and reduce your risk of serious illnesses like Lyme disease.

Here are the most common spots, according to experts.

Thighs

The thighs are the most common place for tick bites. This area offers warmth and friction from clothing, making it easy for ticks to latch on and hide.

Around the waist is a warm, moist area which is perfect for ticks.

Waistbands often press fabric tightly against the skin, which can trap ticks and give them easy access to bite.

Abdomen

Ticks are drawn to warm, covered areas, and the abdomen fits the bill. Be especially vigilant here if you've been out hiking or in tall grass.

Groin

One of the warmest and most hidden spots on the body, the groin is a favorite tick target. Always include this area in your post-outdoor tick checks.

The upper back is difficult to see on your own, making it a prime hiding spot for ticks. Use a mirror or ask someone to help you check thoroughly.

Scalp

Ticks often hide in the scalp, especially in children. It's warm, hard to inspect, and well protected by hair, so take extra care during checks.

Calves and shins

Since ticks usually climb from the ground up, your lower legs are among the first places they make contact.

They’ll often latch on to calves and shins before moving upward.

Upper arms

Another warm, covered area, the upper arms are also common tick hangouts - especially if you’ve been wearing short sleeves and brushing against vegetation.

The back of the knees is dark, warm, and moist which is ideal for ticks. Check this area thoroughly, even if you don’t feel any discomfort.

Armpits

A classic tick hiding spot. Armpits offer warmth and protection, and many people don’t notice a tick there until it's been attached for a while. Always check both sides.

Neck

Especially with dog ticks, which tend to climb upward, the neck becomes a frequent bite site. This area is often overlooked but needs attention.

Lower back

The lower back is a common destination for ticks crawling up from the legs. It’s warm and often covered by clothing, so use a mirror or ask for help when checking.
