Many people store food incorrectly without realizing it – and that can cost both freshness and money.

Potatoes

Although 17 % of people keep their potatoes in the fridge, that’s actually a mistake.

Potatoes should be stored in a cool, dark place – like a kitchen drawer or cupboard. A paper bag works well.

And be sure to keep them away from onions, which can make root vegetables spoil faster.

Eggs

36 % of respondents store eggs in the cupboard, but they last much longer in the fridge.

Ideally, store them at the back where the temperature is most stable. Avoid the fridge door, where fluctuations can cause them to go off more quickly.

Chocolate

29 % keep chocolate in the fridge, but that’s not ideal. The humidity in the fridge can ruin the texture.

Store chocolate in a cool, dark cupboard to keep it smooth and flavorful.

Ketchup

Over half (52%) store ketchup in the cupboard. That’s fine before it’s opened, but once open, ketchup should go in the fridge.

This keeps the taste fresh and preserves it longer.

Veggies

10 % store vegetables like cucumbers in the cupboard, which can cause them to go limp.

Instead, slice them into sticks and place them in a sealed jar of cold water in the fridge.

Change the water every day or so to keep them crisp – this trick also revives veggies that are already getting soft!

Bananas

43 % know bananas make other fruits ripen faster – yet many still store them in a bunch.

Break them apart and store some in the fruit bowl to ripen, others in the fridge to slow down ripening.

This way, you won’t have to eat them all at once or toss out overripe ones.

Sliced bread

Even though 58 % store bread in the cupboard, sliced bread keeps better in the fridge. This extends its shelf life.

But always use your senses before eating – look, smell, and taste.

Only 7 % store their olive oil in the fridge – and that’s a good thing. Refrigeration can alter its flavor due to surrounding odors.

Keep it in a dark, cool cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat.

Fresh bread

Unlike sliced bread, fresh bread should be stored in a cupboard, preferably in a cloth bag.
