New research suggests that something as simple as a HEPA air purifier can make a real difference in blood pressure. Especially for people living close to busy roads.

The study found that people with elevated blood pressure experienced an average drop of 2.8 mm Hg after using a HEPA filter at home for one month.

Not all filters work the same way

Only HEPA filters had an impact on blood pressure. Using a non-HEPA filter actually caused a slight increase in blood pressure.

Traffic-related air pollution is the problem

Living near busy roads exposes people to tiny airborne particles, which are linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure.

HEPA filters remove almost all particles

A true HEPA filter can trap 99.97 % of tiny particles as small as 0.3 microns, including vehicle exhaust and tire wear particles.

The study included 154 participants

Researchers recruited 154 people who lived within 200 meters of at least one high-traffic highway in Massachusetts.

Designed as a crossover study

Participants used both HEPA and non-HEPA filters in alternating periods, allowing researchers to measure the true difference without lifestyle factors interfering.

Results carry major public health implications

Even small reductions in blood pressure can significantly lower the risk of heart disease, making the findings highly relevant for public health.

The results may not apply to everyone

Most participants were white, well-off, and without serious heart conditions, meaning the results don’t necessarily represent the general population.

More than just blood pressure benefits

Beyond lowering exposure to traffic pollution, HEPA filters also remove mold, dust, wildfire smoke, and airborne viruses like influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

Those most at risk stand to benefit the most

People living near high-traffic areas who already have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular risk factors may gain the greatest health benefits from HEPA filtration.
