A large-scale trial of a new combination drug for type 2 diabetes may influence future treatment options.

Novo Nordisk has applied for approval in the United States for the drug CagriSema as a weight loss treatment in combination with diet and exercise.

If approved, it could be used in the same way as Wegovy.

At the same time, the company plans to test the medication against tirzepatide from Eli Lilly.

The market for this type of treatment is developing rapidly, with several companies competing to produce the most effective drugs.

The results come from the phase 3 trial REIMAGINE 2, which has not yet been published in a scientific journal, according to Medical News Today.

Results from the study

The trial included 2,728 people with type 2 diabetes who had not achieved sufficient results with metformin.

At the start, participants had an average long-term blood sugar (HbA1c) level of 8.2 percent and an average weight of 101 kilograms.

Over 68 weeks, participants received either CagriSema, the individual components administered separately, or a placebo.

According to Novo Nordisk’s data reported by Medical News Today, long-term blood sugar levels decreased by 1.91 percentage points in those who received the highest dose of CagriSema.

Among those who received semaglutide alone, the reduction was 1.76 percentage points.

Body weight decreased by an average of 14.2 percent with CagriSema, compared with 10.2 percent with semaglutide alone.

What does the medication contain?

CagriSema combines semaglutide and cagrilintide. Both substances affect hormones that regulate appetite, satiety, and blood sugar levels.

An independent expert interviewed by Medical News Today emphasized that the results come from the manufacturer itself.

Further independent studies are therefore needed to assess effectiveness and side effects.

Only with additional documentation will it be possible to determine whether the treatment is genuinely superior to current options.
