A growing number of serious eye infections is being seen in hospitals.

Doctors in Finland have noticed a clear increase in corneal infections, especially among young adults.

According to Ilta-Sanomat, about 2,000 cases were treated at Helsinki University Hospital in one year.

This type of infection can develop quickly and may become very serious.

It can damage the eye and, in some cases, lead to permanent loss of vision if not treated in time.

Warning signs

Common symptoms include strong eye pain, redness, and sticky discharge. These signs mean a person should seek medical help quickly.

Doctors explain that some infections are caused by bacteria linked to contact lens use.

These bacteria can damage the surface of the eye and make the condition worse in a short time.

Preventable problem

Experts say many of these infections are caused by incorrect use of contact lenses.

Common mistakes include sleeping with lenses, wearing them while swimming, or not cleaning them properly.

Doctors recommend using daily disposable lenses when possible. If reusable lenses are used, they must be cleaned and stored correctly.

The increase in infections shows that many cases could be prevented by following simple safety rules when using contact lenses.
