Many Women Gain Weight During Menopause – Researchers Now Point to These Specific Foods
Many women gain weight during menopause. According to the British Menopause Society, this affects at least half of all women.
A new study published in JAMA Network Open examined how diet influences weight during this stage of life, according to The Sun.
Researchers followed 38,283 women over a 12-year period as part of the American Nurses’ Health Study II.

The women were asked about their diets every four years, while their weight was recorded annually.
These foods stand out
The researchers examined several different dietary patterns, including the Mediterranean diet, plant-based diets, and diets high in ultra-processed foods.
The results showed that some foods were more commonly linked to weight gain. This was particularly true for red and processed meat, French fries, salty foods, and ultra-processed products.
Sugary drinks were also associated with a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Diet can make a difference
The researchers point out that foods rich in fiber and vegetables may help women maintain a more stable weight during menopause.
Women who ate more vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains generally had a lower risk of weight gain.
According to the researchers, the key is choosing foods that help keep blood sugar levels stable and prevent large insulin spikes.
