One common sugar may barely tell your brain you’re full, and it’s in almost everything

Fructose, the sugar found in high-fructose corn syrup and a primary sweetener in sodas, breakfast cereals, breads, condiments and most ultra-processed American foods, may barely tell your brain you are full.

That is the finding of a study in mice published in the journal Neuron in June 2026 by researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center. The results have not yet been replicated in humans.

Both sugars carry the same number of calories, gram for gram. But according to the research, which was highlighted by ScienceDaily, they travel very different routes from the gut to the brain, and only glucose strongly quiets the neurons that drive hunger.

Glucose is the sugar the body pulls out of whole foods such as fruit, whole grains and legumes, where it arrives alongside fiber that further slows the rise in blood sugar.

Fructose, by contrast, dominates the American food supply mainly through high-fructose corn syrup, which is added to soft drinks, sweetened cereals, sauces, dressings, packaged baked goods and a wide range of processed snacks.

How the two sugars reach the brain

In the mice, fructose raised levels of the gut hormone PYY, which then acted through the vagus nerve to modestly dial down agouti-related protein (AgRP) neurons, a population of brain cells that drive the sensation of hunger.

Glucose skipped that PYY route entirely and produced a much stronger suppression of the same neurons, according to the study's summary.

The researchers also tested high-fructose corn syrup, which is a mixture of fructose and glucose. It suppressed the hunger neurons more effectively than fructose alone, and the mice preferred drinks sweetened with glucose or high-fructose corn syrup over drinks sweetened with pure fructose.

"This work adds to our growing understanding of how modern diets, especially those high in fructose or high-fructose corn syrup, interact with the neural systems involved in appetite," said Amber Alhadeff, PhD, the senior author and a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center.

What it means, and what it doesn't

The finding is a mechanistic result in mice, not a treatment recommendation. Human appetite involves many overlapping signals, and the researchers have not shown that people eating fructose-heavy diets absorb fewer fullness cues in real life.

Further studies in humans will be needed to test whether the same gut-brain difference plays out the same way.

Even so, the study points in the same direction as long-standing nutrition advice. Sugars packaged inside whole foods, together with fiber, protein and water, tend to leave people feeling more satisfied than the same calories delivered as sweetened drinks and ultra-processed snacks.
