Chronic stress is not just a mood problem. In a cohort of 2,215 patients with stable coronary heart disease followed for a median of nearly four years, those with high perceived stress had cardiovascular events at a rate of 18.7 percent, compared with 14.1 percent in the lower-stress group, according to a study published in Depression and Anxiety in 2024.
A separate 2024 meta-analysis in the International Journal of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Risk and Prevention pooled 33 studies with 43,641 participants and found that people with higher cortisol had a 60 percent higher relative risk of cardiovascular disease compared with those at lower levels. Higher levels of the other main stress hormones, epinephrine and norepinephrine, showed similar patterns.
The good news is that cortisol responds to daily behavior. Below are six habits with clinical evidence behind them.
Slow, deep breathing
Slow, diaphragmatic breathing engages the vagus nerve, which drives the body's parasympathetic "rest and recover" system. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Life found that stress-reducing interventions, particularly HRV-biofeedback and yoga, improved heart rate variability in patients with cardiovascular disease. Higher heart rate variability is a marker of better autonomic balance and lower physiological stress.

Moderate, not maximal, exercise
Movement is one of the most consistent buffers of the stress system, but intensity matters. A network meta-analysis published in 2025 reported that moderate practices such as yoga, qigong and multicomponent exercise produced the largest reductions in cortisol among adults with psychological distress, with an inverted U-shaped dose response.
Very high-volume or high-intensity sessions can transiently push cortisol up, so a brisk 30-minute walk or an easy bike ride most days is a safer default than pushing to exhaustion.
Consistent sleep
Cortisol follows a daily rhythm that peaks shortly after waking and falls toward midnight. Systematic reviews of sleep and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis show that both objective and subjective decrements in sleep quality heighten stress reactivity of the HPA axis. Regular bed and wake times help keep that rhythm intact.
Deliberate social connection
Being with a trusted person during a stressful moment can blunt the cortisol spike. A classic controlled trial using the Trier Social Stress Test showed that men in a partner support condition had significantly attenuated cortisol responses compared with unsupported men, though the buffering effect depends on sex and the type of relationship. The practical message is simple. Reach out before a hard day, not after.

Ashwagandha, with realistic expectations
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the few supplements with placebo-controlled evidence for cortisol. In a 60-day randomized, double-blind trial of 60 adults published in Medicine in 2019, 240 mg per day of a standardized extract produced a 23 percent reduction in morning cortisol, while the placebo group barely changed.
The trial was small, and anyone taking prescription medication or with thyroid or autoimmune conditions should talk to a doctor before starting a new supplement.
Time outdoors, especially in green space
A meta-analysis of forest bathing found that salivary cortisol was significantly lower after short forest visits than in urban control groups, with reductions in the 12 to 18 percent range in individual studies. You do not need a forest. A daily walk in a park, or morning light exposure on a balcony, delivers a similar rhythm-setting signal.
None of these habits is a cure for a stressful life. Together, though, they give the nervous system what the research shows it actually needs, which is regular chances to calm down.
