Counting hours in bed may not tell you what you need to know about your brain. A population study published in February 2026 in Sleep Medicine: X reports that sleep quality, not duration alone, shapes the odds of mild cognitive impairment in middle-aged and older adults.
By "this part of sleep," the researchers point to what happens between the hours logged. That means uninterrupted, continuous sleep with enough time in the deep, slow-wave stage and in REM, the rapid eye movement phase when the brain is highly active and dreams occur.
What the study actually found
The analysis drew on 7,480 adults aged 45 and older in the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Roughly 16 percent of participants met the criteria for mild cognitive impairment, a state of memory or thinking problems that go beyond normal aging but fall short of dementia.
Poor sleep quality on its own was tied to higher odds of mild cognitive impairment, with an odds ratio of about 1.29. The strongest signal appeared where poor quality combined with long nights in bed. Adults who slept more than eight hours and reported frequent sleep trouble had the highest odds of impairment in the sample.

The study is observational, so it points to associations rather than cause. Sleep quality was measured by self-report of how often participants had trouble sleeping in the past week, not by a laboratory recording.
What sleep quality actually means
Sleep is not a single state. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, a full night cycles through non-REM and REM sleep four to six times, with each cycle lasting 80 to 100 minutes.
Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep, is the restorative stage that dominates earlier in the night. REM sleep, when brain activity resembles waking hours, builds up later. Older adults naturally lose slow-wave sleep, and the NHLBI notes that people in the oldest age groups may not have any slow-wave sleep at all.
Quality sleep, in practical terms, is continuous rest that lets these cycles run their full length. Fragmented nights cut REM and deep sleep short even when the clock shows a respectable total.

What quietly wrecks it
Several everyday habits chip away at sleep quality without necessarily shortening the total. The NHLBI's guidance on healthy sleep habits singles out a familiar list.
Caffeine is one. Its effects can last up to eight hours, so an afternoon coffee can still be at work at bedtime. The NHLBI also advises against alcoholic drinks before bed, along with heavy or large meals within a few hours of bedtime and bright artificial light from screens in the last hour before sleep.
Steps that protect the deeper stages
The NHLBI recommends going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, with weekend variation kept to about an hour. Consistent timing supports the body's sleep-wake rhythm and lets slow-wave and REM sleep settle into their normal pattern.
The agency also advises keeping the bedroom quiet, cool, and dark, and reserving the last hour before bed for quiet time away from bright screens. Avoiding alcohol before bed and skipping heavy meals within a few hours of bedtime protects continuity through the night.
Adults who are consistently tired, notice memory changes, or have persistent trouble sleeping should talk with a clinician. Sleep problems can reflect an underlying condition that benefits from evaluation.
