Salmon packs long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, the pigment antioxidant astaxanthin, high-quality protein and vitamin D into one meal. That nutrient profile is why the American Heart Association places fatty fish at the top of its cardiovascular-nutrition advice, and why Harvard Health treats it as a benchmark whole food for omega-3 intake.
The AHA recommends eating fish at least twice a week, with fatty species such as salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and albacore tuna singled out for their omega-3 content. Harvard Health frames the same message a bit differently, noting that the research supports fatty fish as whole foods rather than fish-oil capsules for most people.
Here is what regular fatty-fish intake has actually been linked to, and where the science still has limits.
Lower triglycerides and better heart numbers
The clearest cardiovascular effect tied to marine omega-3s is a drop in triglycerides, a blood fat that raises heart-disease risk when levels stay high.

In a science advisory for hypertriglyceridemia, the American Heart Association concluded that 4 grams a day of prescription omega-3s lower triglyceride levels by roughly 20 to 30 percent in most people who need treatment.
Ordinary servings of fatty fish do not reach that dose, but they feed into the broader intake pattern the AHA links to lower heart-disease and stroke risk.
What omega-3s may do for your brain
EPA and especially DHA are structural building blocks of the brain. Higher fish intake has been linked in observational studies to a lower risk of cognitive decline.
Harvard Health, however, points out that the evidence for supplements is inconsistent. A large trial in the New England Journal of Medicine found that omega-3 capsules did not reduce heart attacks, strokes or heart-disease deaths in middle-aged adults without known risk factors.

The signal, in other words, is stronger for eating fish than for popping pills.
Astaxanthin, the pigment that turns salmon pink
Astaxanthin is the carotenoid that gives salmon flesh its color, and it comes with its own line of research.
A systematic review published in the NIH's PubMed Central database reported that astaxanthin consistently lowered pro-inflammatory markers such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha and improved antioxidant capacity in human trials.
The same review flagged wide variation in dosage and duration across studies, and noted that long-term safety data are still limited. The compound is one reason nutrition researchers see salmon as more than an omega-3 delivery vehicle.

Joints, chronic pain and vitamin D
For people living with chronic pain, including joint conditions, a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Medicine linked omega-3 supplementation to reduced pain scores. The effect is modest and works alongside, not instead of, prescribed treatment.
Salmon is also one of the few common foods that naturally supplies meaningful amounts of vitamin D, a nutrient tied to bone and immune health.
The practical ceiling: mercury and how much is enough
The federal safety guidance from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration places salmon on its Best Choices list and advises adults to eat two to three servings of lower-mercury fish per week.
That ceiling is built around mercury exposure, which can affect the developing brain, and applies especially to people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or feeding young children.
