Twelve weeks of training with elastic bands produced similar gains in strength and functional performance as training with free weights in community-dwelling older adults, according to a randomized controlled trial published in Experimental Gerontology in 2026. What the research actually shows
A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in SAGE Open Medicine pooled trials comparing the two modalities across different populations. The authors concluded that elastic resistance training produces similar strength gains to conventional resistance training with dumbbells and machines.
A more recent meta-analysis of 25 randomized trials with 1,318 older adults, published in November 2025, reached a similar practical conclusion for the aging population. Bands improved leg-extension strength, chair-stand performance, the timed-up-and-go test, and functional reach, and the authors noted that longer intervention durations tended to yield greater strength benefits.

The mechanical difference
Bands and barbells load muscles in different ways. A dumbbell delivers a constant load through the range of motion. An elastic band gets harder the more you stretch it, so resistance peaks at full extension, when the muscle is shortest.
That variable curve turns out to matter less than expected once people actually lift with it. In a 2020 study of 16 resistance-trained men in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, deadlifts with bands added to the barbell produced higher forces but no significant differences in muscle activation across the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, spinal erectors, and quadriceps compared with barbell-only lifts. The researchers noted the null result was contrary to their hypothesis.
Bands, weights, or both?
For everyday strength and functional fitness, the choice is more about logistics than physiology. Bands fit in a suitcase, cost a fraction of a barbell set, and forgive poor form more gently.
Free weights allow easier heavy loading for people chasing maximum size and strength. Added plates also give a familiar path to progressive overload.

Older adults, frequent travelers, and anyone rehabbing an injury may reasonably start with bands. Cost is low, joint loading is friendly, and the strength gains match free weights in the trials.
Serious lifters aiming for peak hypertrophy typically still prefer barbells and dumbbells. Adding bands to those lifts is a legitimate way to raise peak force and train explosive strength.
Progressive overload is the piece the equipment cannot decide for you. With bands, that means moving to thicker tubing, doubling up bands, or shortening the working length by stepping further onto the anchor point.
