Adding a few servings of beans, lentils or chickpeas to your weekly meals may measurably improve blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a narrative review published in August 2026 in the journal Nutrients.
The Austrian researchers pulled together two decades of evidence on plant-based eating and concluded that legumes stood out among the foods most consistently tied to steadier glucose after meals.
The clearest signal came from an earlier pooled analysis of 41 randomized controlled trials cited in the review.
That meta-analysis found that eating legumes lowered post-meal glucose and insulin surges, the sharp rises that make blood sugar harder to control in type 2 diabetes.

How the gut turns beans into steadier blood sugar
Legumes are rich in fermentable fiber, meaning fiber that gut bacteria can break down.
When bacteria in the colon ferment that fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids, small molecules such as acetate, butyrate and propionate.
According to a research review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, these short-chain fatty acids can improve insulin sensitivity, the ability of the body's cells to respond to insulin and pull sugar out of the blood.
The Austrian authors are careful not to oversell that pathway. They note that the fermentable fiber in legumes is thought to feed short-chain fatty acid producing bacteria, but that longer-term effects on HbA1c, a three-month average of blood sugar, and fasting glucose still vary from study to study.

What else the review found
The same review pointed to whole grains as another standout. Insoluble cereal fibers, the kind found in wheat bran and other whole grains, showed the most consistent link to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
Every extra 10 grams of cereal fiber per day was associated with a 25 percent lower risk of developing the disease.
Red meat pulled in the opposite direction. In a pooled analysis of nearly 2 million adults cited by the authors, each extra 50 grams a day of processed meat was tied to a 15 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes, and each 100 grams a day of unprocessed red meat to a 10 percent higher risk.
Because this was a narrative review rather than a systematic one, the authors flag that they did not follow a predefined protocol or run a formal risk-of-bias assessment on each study.

That does not undo the pattern across the evidence, but it is why the review talks in trends rather than exact percentages of glucose reduction.
Cheap, filling and already on the guidelines
The American Diabetes Association already lists legumes, peas and lentils alongside whole grains and non-starchy vegetables as core foods for people managing blood sugar.
A half-cup serving of cooked beans delivers roughly 7 to 9 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein, with a low glycemic index, meaning it raises blood sugar slowly.
