A popular children’s toy is now facing closer scrutiny. Several findings have raised concerns about whether the products are safe for children.

The soft squishy products have become popular on social media. Some are sold as fidget toys designed to help children calm down or stay focused, LADbible reports, citing The Telegraph.

This is not the first time warnings have been issued about this type of toy. The Squeezy Dumplings product was previously recalled because it contained excessive levels of benzene.

According to the UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards, the product’s outer layer contained 20 milligrams of benzene per kilogram. The permitted limit in the UK is five milligrams per kilogram.

Sold online

The Telegraph investigated several squishy products that were sold online and marketed to children. Journalists from the newspaper ordered several of the products themselves.

Some could be purchased through third-party sellers on Amazon.

According to LADbible, Amazon removed the affected products from sale and initiated recalls. The company also said it would review the relevant listings.

The UK’s consumer protection minister, Kate Dearden, said her department was investigating the matter, according to The Telegraph.

Child injured

The latest concern relates to what was included with some of the products.

They came with syringes and sharp needles that could be used to inject air into the toys.

According to The Telegraph, a child ended up in the emergency department after injuring a finger on a needle that came with a product marketed as a toy.

The case has prompted the Chartered Trading Standards Institute to warn about the risks posed by dangerous products sold through third-party retailers online.
