Many people accept sore knees, aching hips or tired legs as an unavoidable part of daily life. Whether you spend hours on your feet or sit at a desk all day, discomfort often seems normal.

However, experts say the real source of those aches may be much lower than most people expect.

According to Czech physician Dr Kateřina Cajthamlová, speaking on Czech Radio's Vesele a zdravě, healthy feet play a much bigger role in overall body function than many realise, reports Strednicechy.rozhlas.cz.

The body's foundation

Your feet absorb every step you take and help keep the body properly aligned. When the arches do not provide enough support, extra strain can gradually spread to the ankles, knees, hips and even the spine.

That is why specialists recommend seeking professional advice before purchasing orthotic insoles, as the wrong type may fail to address the underlying issue.

Pain beyond the feet

Foot problems are not always limited to discomfort in the feet themselves. Changes in the way the feet move can influence posture and place additional stress on other joints throughout the body.

Warning signs that may deserve attention include:

  • Ongoing foot pain or unusual fatigue.
  • Knee or hip discomfort without an obvious injury.
  • Changes in the way you walk or distribute weight.
  • Persistent aches that worsen after standing or walking.

Early intervention matters

Children can also benefit from early assessment if changes in walking become noticeable.

Specialists often recommend targeted exercises before considering orthotic inserts, as strengthening the muscles that support the feet can encourage healthy development.

Dr Cajthamlová also notes that minimalist footwear is not suitable for everyone.

While walking on varied natural surfaces may help strengthen the feet, people with spinal conditions or structural foot problems should seek professional guidance before making significant changes to their footwear.
