A doctor says one common dinner habit could be limiting the benefits of GLP-1 medication.

Losing weight with GLP-1 medication is about more than simply taking a weekly injection. While these drugs are designed to help reduce appetite, experts say lasting results still depend on the everyday habits that surround treatment.

According to reporting by UNILAD, which cites comments from physician Dr. Jones and research published in Cell Metabolism, the timing and composition of dinner may deserve more attention than many patients currently give it.

More than medication

Much of the conversation around GLP-1 drugs has centred on their ability to suppress hunger. Dr. Jones, however, argues that what people choose to eat in the evening may influence how effectively they support their weight-loss efforts.

He suggests that meals built around refined carbohydrates, including pasta, rice and dishes with sweet sauces, may not be the best choice before the body's longest fasting period begins overnight.

Research offers clues

A controlled crossover study published in Cell Metabolism in 2022 found that eating later in the day increased hunger, reduced energy expenditure and altered fat tissue in ways that favoured energy storage.

Dr. Jones also emphasises that total calorie intake remains the primary driver of weight loss. Rather than replacing a calorie-controlled diet, dinner choices should be viewed as one factor that may help support consistent progress.

His recommendation

Instead of starch-heavy evening meals, Dr. Jones says his clinic encourages patients to build dinner around protein, vegetables and healthy fats.

Examples include: Fish or lean meat served with vegetables and healthy fats such as avocado oil or butter.

According to Dr. Jones, this approach may help people stay fuller for longer, preserve lean muscle during weight loss and make it easier to stick with healthy eating habits while using GLP-1 medication.
