Experts say your favourite summer foods could be having an unexpected impact on your hair.

Warm weather often brings changes to everyday eating habits. Barbecues, holidays and sweet treats become more common, while balanced meals can easily take a back seat, reports Mirror.

Although many people focus on protecting their skin during the summer, experts say nutrition may also play an important role in maintaining healthy hair.

Research published on PubMed suggests that deficiencies in key nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and protein, can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle.

Citing this research, the Daily Mirror reported comments from hair restoration specialist Dr. Emrah Cinik, who believes some popular summer foods and drinks may contribute to weaker hair when they regularly replace healthier alternatives.

More than one factor

Dr. Cinik says hair follicles require a steady supply of nutrients to produce strong strands. Diets high in processed foods, sugar and alcohol may reduce the body's ability to provide those nutrients, while excessive alcohol consumption can also affect hydration and the absorption of iron, zinc and B vitamins.

However, experts stress that nutrition is only one factor linked to hair health. Genetics, hormones, illness, medication and stress are also recognised as common causes of hair thinning and hair loss.

Focus on balance

Rather than avoiding summer favourites altogether, Dr. Cinik recommends focusing on overall eating habits. Ice cream, processed meats, fried foods, sugary treats and alcoholic drinks can still be enjoyed in moderation, provided they do not replace a varied and nutritious diet.

Choosing foods such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, fish, yoghurt, nuts and other protein-rich options can help provide nutrients that support normal hair growth. Staying hydrated throughout the summer is also considered important for overall health.

While no single food determines the condition of your hair, specialists agree that consistent healthy eating habits over time are more likely to support stronger hair than relying on seasonal indulgences alone.
