During pregnancy, certain foods can pose risks to both you and your baby. While a balanced diet is essential, some ingredients should be limited or avoided altogether.

Here are 10 foods you should be cautious about while expecting.

Raw or undercooked meat

Raw or partially cooked meat can contain harmful bacteria and parasites, such as Toxoplasma and Salmonella.

Always ensure your meat is fully cooked to reduce the risk of infections that could harm your baby.

Soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk

Brie, Camembert, and blue cheese may contain Listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious complications in pregnancy. Opt for hard cheeses or pasteurized alternatives instead.

Raw seafood and sushi

Raw fish, including sushi and oysters, can expose you to bacteria and parasites. Stick to fully cooked seafood to minimize health risks.

High-mercury fish

Unwashed fruits and vegetables

Fresh produce is essential for a healthy pregnancy, but unwashed fruits and vegetables can carry Toxoplasma and other bacteria. Wash all produce thoroughly before eating.

Caffeine in high amounts

Too much caffeine can increase the risk of miscarriage or low birth weight. Keep your daily caffeine intake under 200 mg, which is roughly two cups of coffee.

Processed deli meats

Cold cuts, hot dogs, and pâtés can sometimes be contaminated with Listeria. If you consume deli meats, heat them until steaming hot to kill any bacteria.

Excessive licorice consumption

Alcohol
