After one night, a former Michelin-starred restaurant became the center of a public health scandal that shocked a nation.

A name once synonymous with excellence

In Osaka, Japan, the restaurant Kiichi held a Michelin star in the 2010s. It was known for refined Japanese cuisine and a loyal clientele.

But in mid-February 2025, what should have been a fine dining experience turned into a nightmare.

At least 33 diners reported symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Health authorities linked the outbreak to food consumed at Kiichi. An immediate order was issued to shut the restaurant temporarily.

For most, that would have been the end of the story. But this case took a darker turn.

Ignoring the warnings

Instead of complying fully with the closure order, the restaurant reportedly resumed limited operations as soon as the next day.

They sold 11 takeaway bento boxes. Some of these were later suspected of containing dangerous pathogens.

More customers became ill. Health authorities now say at least 80 people were affected by a highly contagious virus, believed to be norovirus.

Though the symptoms passed, the damage was done.

Kiichi remained closed until March and later issued a public apology.

The restaurant promised stricter hygiene standards and said it "deeply regretted" the series of events. But apologies were not enough to satisfy the law.

Arrests and formal charges

Police has now arrested the restaurant’s owners: 69-year-old Hirokazu Kitano, his 68-year-old wife Noriko, and their 41-year-old son Hirotoshi.

All three now face charges for violating Japan’s food safety laws.

While all affected customers have recovered, the authorities moved forward with formal prosecution.

The case has stirred public outrage and prompted renewed discussions around food safety - even at prestigious establishments.
