Anyone who spends time in the gym knows how quickly concerns about supplements can spread. One week, a product is being praised for its performance benefits. The next, social media is filled with warnings about potential side effects.
Few supplements have experienced that cycle more than creatine. Despite being one of the most researched sports nutrition products in the world, questions about its possible connection to hair loss have continued to surface for years. Now, according to reporting by Men's Fitness , new research is putting that claim under fresh scrutiny.
A theory that refused to disappear
The concern largely stems from an older study that suggested creatine supplementation might increase levels of DHT, a hormone often associated with male pattern baldness, reports AOL.
Although the findings received widespread attention, the study did not actually examine whether participants lost hair. Instead, it focused on hormonal changes that some researchers believed could potentially influence hair follicles.

Over time, that distinction became blurred as the theory spread throughout gyms, fitness forums and social media discussions.
Looking beyond hormones
Researchers behind a new study decided to investigate the issue more directly. They recruited 45 resistance-trained men between the ages of 18 and 40 and followed them for 12 weeks.
Participants were randomly assigned to receive either creatine monohydrate or a placebo, while researchers monitored hormone levels and conducted detailed scalp assessments using specialized imaging technology.
Rather than relying solely on blood markers, the team examined factors such as hair density, hair thickness, follicle counts and overall scalp health.

What the results showed
When the study concluded, researchers found no meaningful differences between the creatine group and the placebo group. Hair density, thickness and follicle measurements remained comparable across both groups.
The researchers also did not observe significant differences in DHT levels, a finding that aligns with much of the existing research on creatine supplementation.
Like all studies, the research had limitations, including its relatively short duration. However, the findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that genetics and other biological factors are far more important drivers of hair loss than creatine use.
For people considering the supplement, the latest research offers reassurance that one of fitness culture's most common fears may be far less grounded in evidence than many once believed.
