Same person, same home, same job. Change one thing, the air, and mental flexibility measurably sharpens after a single month.
That is the picture emerging from a randomized crossover trial published in Scientific Reports on April 22, 2026, part of the HAFTRAP project.
Researchers followed 119 adults aged 30 to 74 living in Somerville, Massachusetts, a dense neighborhood near Interstate 93 and Route 28.
Each participant spent one month with a working HEPA unit and one month with a lookalike sham device, in random order, separated by a one-month break.

Among participants aged 40 and older, roughly 42 percent of the sample, executive function scores improved noticeably after the HEPA month.
Younger participants showed no such benefit.
A small study
The cognitive test in question was Part B of the Trail Making Test, a pen-and-paper task where the participant draws lines between alternating numbers and letters.
It measures mental flexibility, the brain's ability to switch between rules on the fly.

Adults 40 and older completed Part B in 54.0 seconds on average after the HEPA month, versus 61.4 seconds after the sham month, a 12 percent faster time.
No comparable shift appeared in people under 40.
The authors, led by Nicholas Pellegrino and Doug Brugge at the University of Connecticut with biostatistician Misha Eliasziw of Tufts University, describe the effect size as broadly on par with what regular exercise contributes to cognition.
Still, the trial was small and short. Fewer than 10 participants were over 60, so conclusions about older adults remain preliminary.

Why 40 seems to be a turning point
Air pollution is thought to chip away at brain white matter, the tissue that carries electrical signals between regions handling planning and switching, the very functions the Trail Making Test taps.
The researchers argue those effects begin to show up more clearly around midlife and grow with age, which fits the pattern in their data.
Fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, is the pollutant of most concern near busy roads.
HEPA filters are designed to trap it, along with dust, pollen and smoke particles.

Ventilation choices matter too: one open window can shift bedroom air quality in ways that show up on sleep and next-day alertness.
How to pick a purifier that actually clears your room
The single most useful spec is the Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR.
The Environmental Protection Agency advises matching CADR to room size, with a rough floor of 195 cfm for a 300-square-foot room, and going higher if ceilings exceed 8 feet.
A few practical points to check before buying.

- Look for "true HEPA" wording. Filters marketed as "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like" are not certified to the 99.97 percent standard for 0.3-micron particles.
- Prefer models with an AHAM Verified CADR label, which means an independent lab measured the rating.
- Place the unit in the room where you spend the most time, usually the bedroom or living room, and keep curtains and furniture from blocking the airflow.
- Replace the filter on schedule. A clogged HEPA filter loses efficiency.
Anyone with persistent breathing problems, cardiovascular disease or symptoms they suspect are pollution-related should raise them with their doctor rather than rely on a purifier alone.
The HAFTRAP team plans to test whether cleaner indoor air protects white matter directly and whether longer use produces larger cognitive gains.
